How to Eliminate Those Annoying Ants in Your Home and Keep Them from Coming Back

By Brian, June 30, 2016

Is there actually anyone who enjoys seeing ants in their homes? Didn’t think so. If you have an ant infestation at home, try these tips and see if you can get rid of them on your own. Otherwise, you’ll need to use an extermination service before these nasty little critters damage your home’s structure and sting your family with their bite.

1: ID the ants.

You have to know what type of ants are living in your home because there are different ways to get rid of them depending on their species.

2: Place baits in strategic locations.

You should make sure the poison is easy to reach. Put them in areas like along the walls, under the sink or right outside holes. You want the ants to be able to bring back the bait to their nest so their queen will be able to eat it.

3: Resist the temptation to kill them on the spot.

Oftentimes, people are tempted to just squish the ants right then and there but you shouldn’t do this. Again, you want the ants to take the poison to their nest.

4: Get rid of their trails.

These critters leave a scented trail so that it’s easier for all the other ants to follow where the food is. Eliminate these trails using a vinegar and water solution. Just spray this mixture in areas where ants frequent.

5: Eliminate ant hills.

Check your yard for ant hills/mounds and use an insecticide to get rid of them. If you have a big ant problem, use products that contain bifenthrin, which is very effective in killing ants.

6: Hunt down their nest.

If you see carpenter ants, it’s very important to hunt down their nest. Look for damp areas in your home, inspect exterior walls, bathrooms and attics to see if there’s an ant nest. When you find the nest, spray it with an insecticide.

Preventing an Ant Invasion

Bug experts agree that pesticides are more potent compared to natural remedies. But if you want to use toxin-free products to eliminate these critters, you can use any of the following:

Spray some lemon juice on your windowsills, doors and holes in your wall. You can also scatter small lemon peel slices in your entrances. Ants do not like the smell and acidity of lemon.

Another way to keep ants out of your home is to use herbs and spices. You can protect your food by putting bay leaf inside containers or you can tape it to the canister lid. Cinnamon sticks, whole cloves and sage also keep the ants at bay.

If none of these work, the best option is to call an exterminator. They have the tools and expertise to ensure ants are completely eradicated from your home. Reputable exterminators use products that are safe for indoor use so that you and your loved ones won’t be exposed to toxic substances. They can also give you advice on how to keep ants from re-entering your home in the future.
