section 8With the US government’s section 8 program, it has become possible for low income families and the homeless to find and live in comfortable lodgings that they can afford. If you are not sure how to proceed, there is assistance available to help you become familiar with the process.

Online Assistance

The best place to look for assistance is the Internet, as there are many websites devoted to it right now. Just Google “Section 8 assistance” and you will find resources explaining what the program is about and how to go about it. There are now also many cities that permit processing and application for Section 8 on the web, which is really quite convenient.

Not all cities allow you to use the Internet to process the application, and even some of those that do may not actually allow the processing online. Instead what they offer is an online form that you can fill up, print and then mail out. Regardless of whether you have to print the form or apply online directly, these websites can provide you with a lot of information so you won’t be caught unprepared.

Another reason why it makes sense to use the Web is that most cities provide information about the waiting list. In many cases they actually get you on the list online, which is of course more convenient than going to the local office and wait.

How to Get Assistance

The first thing that you should do is check if the city you are applying at has a website. If it has one, just go there and follow the instructions. All the official city sites will end in .gov and at least include some information about Section 8. Once you are on the website, look for options like “Family Assistance”, “Family Services”, “Housing”, “Section 8” or something similar.

If you look for Section 8 or housing, chances are your city’s official website will provide information about it. Go through everything if you are not familiar with how the program works. Once you are familiar with the process, you should look for the online application form, which should also be on the site. Note that if the city is for some reason not accepting applicants, this will stated clearly.

Applying for Section 8

After making sure that you are qualified for the housing program, fill up the application with accurate and truthful information. Submit it online if allowed, or print the form out and mail to the appropriate office. The mailing address will be provided on the web or on the form. Double check the address and make sure that it is the correct one before you send it out.

Now you just need to wait for a response. But if the number of people in your household changes or the income changes, you need to go back to the website and make the appropriate modifications. The majority of these sites allow you to make changes and update them. If you are not sure how to do it, send an email or cal them.

Even if you qualify, it is a good idea if you apply in many different cities as the waiting time can be quite long. If you apply elsewhere, there’s a good chance that you will get a voucher much more quickly.
